About
Steve Ryu is a South Korean-born troubadour who embarked on a journey to Bakersfield, California alone at the age of thirteen. Over nearly two decades, he traversed multiple cities and states across the US before returning briefly to South Korea for mandatory military duty, navigating the challenges of the pandemic, and pursuing corporate roles. In 2022, Ryu relocated to Ithaca, New York, to be with his loved ones.
Drawing inspiration from the folk rock anthems of the 60s and 70s, Ryu crafts bittersweet songs that explore themes of self-discovery and the quest for 'home.' His music reflects the intertwining of relationships, memories, and emotions, viewed through the lens of an outsider traveling through diverse landscapes across the US.
His latest EP, "Moonpainted" (2024), was recorded at Valentine Studios in Los Angeles, CA. Collaborating with musicians Tyler Chester on bass guitar and piano, Sean Watkins on electric guitar and mandolin, and Griffin Goldsmith on drums, Ryu blends poignant lyrics with rich musical arrangements that resonate with listeners on a journey of their own towards ‘ home.’
